After a brief history of the shelters used by the first explorers of the Kerguelen archipelago, discover how scientists work today in these lands located between the roaring 40th and the screaming 50th through the peculiarity of their expeditions to the four corners of the archipelago thanks to the shelters and huts that allow them to be closer to their subjects of studies: penguins, sea elephants, albatrosses and endangered glaciers.
Laëtitia Thérond is the scientific and cultural director of the Espace des Mondes Polaires Paul-Émile Victor. She led five missions to the Kerguelen Islands to carry out, in particular, the archaeological map of the archipelago.
With Jean-Yves Besselièvre and Lénaïg L'Aot-Lombart, Laëtitia Thérond is the author of the book Trip to the Austral lands – Crozet & Kerguelen, from their discovery to the present day, published in 2022 (co-edition Locus Solus/Musée national de la marine).
