Conference "Living in a cabin on the Kerguelen Islands" by Laëtitia Therond, director of the Museum…
CompletAs part of the national operation "Lève les yeux", reserved for schoolchildren from middle school onwards, students will be invited to attend the conference "Vivre en cabane aux îles Kerguelen" by Laëtitia Therond, director of the Museum of the Polar Worlds. After a brief history of the shelters used by the first explorers of the Kerguelen archipelago, the students will discover how scientists work today in these lands located between the roaring 40th and the 50th howling. In the four corners of the archipelago, they carry out their missions thanks to shelters and huts that allow them to be closer to their subjects of study: penguins, elephant seals, albatrosses and endangered glaciers.
Laëtitia Thérond is the scientific and cultural director of the Musée des Mondes polaires Paul-Émile Victor. She led five missions to the Kerguelen Islands to carry out, in particular, the archaeological map of the archipelago. With Jean-Yves Besselièvre and Lénaïg L'Aot-Lombart, she is the author of the book Trip to the Austral lands – Crozet & Kerguelen, from their discovery to the present day, published in 2022 (co-edition Locus Solus/Musée national de la marine).E-mails.petillat@espacedesmondespolaires.orgE-mailreservation@espacedesmondespolaires.orgBookAccessibilityMobility Impairment

Free visit of the Museum of the Polar Worlds
A true immersion in the heart of ice, the Musée des Mondes Polaires Paul-Émile Victor is an invitation to explore the Arctic and Antarctic. In the middle of monumental landscapes, the permanent exhibition offers you a unique journey to discover the riches of these fascinating regions. Your visit will lead you to meet researchers and explorers, polar animals (naturalized), models of boats or even objects of Inuit art. By following in the footsteps of Paul-Émile Victor, the museum also draws up an inventory of the polar regions and raises the question of their future by crossing history with life sciences and the Earth, ethnology with glaciology, economics with ecology. Faced with today’s questions, issues and challenges, the Musée des Mondes Polaires Paul-Émile Victor gives a voice to explorers, scientists and contemporary artists to bring their share of knowledge, dream and imagination about these regions. As many insights to better understand the human, environmental and economic issues related to the balance of the planet, by questioning us for example on the future of the polar bear in its natural environment or that of the Inuit peoples. The temporary exhibition Polar passions, when dreams lead to the poles, is dedicated to the French polar explorers as well as all other "polar" who, through their passion, perpetuate in their own way the right to dream. Dreamed spaces, places of wonder and theatres of imagination: the poles do not leave indifferent. At the origin of polar dreams, two names emerge: those of Jean-Baptiste Charcot and Paul-Émile Victor, the most illustrious French polar explorers. Through their charisma, their stories of expeditions and their willingness to encourage young people to achieve dreams, they have inspired and still inspire generations of dreamers of the poles.Phone0339508020BookAccessibilityMobility Impairment
