The University of Montpellier was, in 1289, the place where the third university was founded, after those of Paris and Toulouse. In 1970, the former faculties of Law, Sciences and Letters were reformed into three separate universities, including the University of Montpellier Paul-Valéry. The campus route de Mende, labeled 'remarkable contemporary architecture' dates from 1966\. It is connected to the city center of Montpellier in a few tens of minutes by tram or bike. The campus enjoys a stimulating setting where Mediterranean vegetation and many works of art punctuate this beautiful wooded area to the north of the city. In 2024, it thus inaugurated its new 'learning center' Atrium, an iconic architectural project of the Campus Operation. More than a new-generation university library, the building has been designed as the figurehead of the campus
