During the Second World War, the German general staff chose the port of Saint-Nazaire as a shelter for its submarines.
Between 1941 and 1943, he built a concrete fortress with 14 cells that profoundly altered the face of the city and the port.

This in situ exhibition in three parts offers a unique point of view on the underwater base, a heritage site of major interest for the territory.A major witness of the 20th centuryAn exhibition in three stages tells about the underwater base, its construction, its role and its uses of yesterday and today.Through an educational journey on its history, furniture encouraging its exploration and a large-format photographic immersion, it highlights its heritage.By Saint-Nazaire Tourism Agglomeration – Engineering Unit and Heritage HubWhy this exhibition?In 2027, the roof of the submarine base will close to the public to allow for sustainability work. This work, unprecedented in its scope and technicality, mainly aims to correct a major malfunction: the submarine base takes on water! Designed to resist bombs, the imposing roof can do nothing against the flow of water that threatens the cultural and tourist facilities installed below.In 2028, at the end of these works, the roof of the base, renewed and rehabilitated, will host a new permanent exhibition dedicated to the submarine base and its surroundings.To prepare for this deadline, the City of Saint-Nazaire entrusted Saint-Nazaire Renversante with the design and realization of a prefiguring exhibition, accessible upstream and throughout the duration of the work. This temporary exhibition takes place in the heart of the underwater base and offers a unique perspective on this heritage site of major interest for the territory.
